The route

From start to finish,
drawn by hand.

Every journey is charted across Bosnia & Herzegovina with intention. A single line for a single week, and the slow cartography of a country best met unhurried.

Overview

A different kind of journey.

Five days exploring Sarajevo — the Ottoman bazaar of Baščaršija, the Austro-Hungarian center, the tunnel under the airport runway, and the mountain hotels above the city where Tito once held court.

The program

Day by day.

Arrival in Sarajevo

Met at the airport and driven to your boutique hotel in the old town. The evening is yours — a suggested walk along the Miljacka river and dinner at a traditional restaurant where the cook comes out to tell you what he made that morning.

Baščaršija & the old city

A slow morning walking the Ottoman bazaar with our historian. You visit the Gazi Husrev-beg mosque, the Sebilj fountain, the old caravanserai that is now an inn. Lunch at a workers' ćevabdžinica that has been grilling the same sixteen grams per skewer since 1961.

Afternoon crosses into the Austro-Hungarian center — the City Hall, the Latin Bridge where Franz Ferdinand was shot, and the cathedral square. The contrast of two empires in two hours is the point.

Tunnel & the ridge

Morning at the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum — the 800-meter passage under the runway that kept the city alive during the siege. We walk the original section that remains, and the family who owns the house it was dug under will tell you what it was like.

Afternoon on Mt Igman, the ridge above the city. Lunch at a mountain lodge looking down at Sarajevo from above the clouds.

Mountain hotel above Sarajevo
Sarajevo · Trebević

Trebević & the old bobsled

Cable car up to Trebević, the mountain that overlooks the city from the south. We walk the abandoned 1984 Olympic bobsled track — now overgrown and covered in careful graffiti, somewhere between a ruin and a gallery. The views back down into the valley are the kind you remember.

Dinner tonight at a mountain hotel where Tito once held meetings. The chef here grows most of what he serves.
